Week 2 is officially in the books. We had some upsets, some top 10 teams lose, and some last second Hail Mary drama. It was just another Saturday in college football, the drama and headlines seamlessly right themselves. Ohio State comes off a huge road win in Big Ten play, Oregon looks shaky against Fresno State. What does college football deliver? How about a Oregon Ducks upset victory in the Horseshoe? This was the headline of the weekend and that doesn’t even include a big Iowa win at Iowa state, Texas getting beat around by an SEC team that will finish toward the bottom of the conference, and Jacksonville State scoring a walk off touchdown from their own 41. There were plenty more winners and losers from week 2, but first let’s see some overreactions to this weekend.
Overreactions:
Oregon in, Ohio State out.
When it comes to the college football playoff, Ohio State has consistently found a way to make the field of four. They suffer a huge setback here against Oregon that exposed a lot of flaws on this team. They are out for right now, but they are more than likely going to run the table the rest of the year and be in a prime position to make the playoff while Oregon has historically hurt themselves in the CFB playoff era and that could happen once again.
Matt Campbell is done at Iowa State.
It is safe to say that Campbell has struggled to get past the Hawks in his tenure at Iowa State. He has been in the market to get a top college football job and even some NFL looks, but he has built something at Iowa State. This year’s team was supposed to be the golden child and after another year of losing to in state rival Iowa, this could be the time to move on for Coach Campbell.
The end of USC as we know it.
A gut-wrenching loss to Stanford at home on Saturday is an understatement. 14-point favorites at home, against one of the worst Stanford teams in recent memory, with a veteran QB and you lose the game is unacceptable. Clay Helton getting fired sooner rather than later is looking more likely than ever at this point, USC must get this next hire right and start playing football the way they traditionally have.
Winners:
Oregon Ducks
This is an easy one, you are always going to make the winners list when you win at Ohio State. Not only that but Oregon looks to be in a nice spot to contend for a playoff spot. Will they keep this momentum all year?
Iowa Hawkeyes
Back-to-back weeks for the Hawks, making the winners category, beating a top 10 in-state rival and ranked teams in each of the first two weeks will set you up very nicely. Can the offense come around to help this defense?
Arkansas Razorbacks
Sam Pittman had the guys ready to go and playing inspired right away from the opening kickoff. He wanted to take it to Texas in this rivalry and did exactly that. How far will this momentum take them?
Kentucky Wildcats
A huge win for the Wildcats at home and Will Levis looks to be a leader of this new and improved offense that has a ton of weapons around them. Is this the surprise team of the year in the SEC?
BYU Cougars
Newly invited into the Big 12 conference, BYU came away with a massive top 25 victory in a rivalry game that a lot of people didn’t think they would be in. How good are the Cougars post Zach Wilson?
Losers:
Texas Longhorns
After such an impressive week one victory, it hurt to watch the Longhorns team go back to what we have seen from them in recent years. Out toughed and just completely outplayed. It seems to be one step forward, two steps back with this program lately.
Florida State Seminoles
It went from winning a game narrowly that you didn’t play your best in, to a heartbreaker and season ruiner real fast for Florida State. I still can’t get past the lack of communication and awareness from that defense on a fourth down with so little time on the clock for a man to get behind you and find a way in the endzone.
Utah Utes
This rivalry game is never easy, and BYU has built a strong program. But, when you are ranked and others around you in the Pac 12 are seeming to have issues this year (USC, Washington, Stanford) you must take advantage of that. This is a loss that could sting a little while.
USC Trojans
I don’t want to be a dead horse, (no pun intended) but the magnitude of this loss for USC could be a program shifter. This is such a bad loss for multiple reasons, ranked and at home, a bad Stanford team, and UCLA looks like they are ready for a big year. USC could have made a big matchup between them and UCLA in the future but now I am not sure. The good news out of this is that Clay Helton should be on the way out now. It has seemed to be clear for a while now that he wasn’t the man for the job and was barely hanging on. Now will they be able to find someone that can recruit the region well and bring USC back to the top of college football.
